Academy

The Fire Academy stands as the foundation for the comprehensive knowledge that firefighters acquire throughout their careers. This is where our recruits are instilled with the fundamental skills and wisdom of the profession, gaining insights into the hazards, both physical and mental challenges, and the gratifications inherent in the Fire Service.

Our Fire Academy convenes twice a week, along with Saturday sessions starting in January and concluding in August, although the timeframe may be subject to adjustments based on provided information and instructions. Throughout this period, recruits have the opportunity to respond to calls, contingent on their training level, whenever they are not attending academy classes. Unlike regular shift attendance standards, recruit classes are exempt from such requirements as their primary focus is on their studies.

As the Fire Academy nears its conclusion, recruit classes typically integrate into shifts with on-duty fire crews. This transition allows them to gain practical experience in the Fire Service beyond the confines of the classroom and drill ground.

Upon successful completion of the Academy, recruits can choose to be sworn in and commence their volunteer service with Bennett-Watkins Fire Rescue during the graduation ceremony. The Bennett Fire Academy provides training and certification up to the level of Colorado State Firefighter I, Hazardous Materials-Operations (HazMat Ops), and First Responder (or EMT, if the program is available) for those without prior medical experience.
